Where It All Began in Radio

Having followed Country Music for many years, presenting it on radio for the last 24 years or so has been a highlight for me. I try to present the music that others don't play, even if this decision does create some objection in the mainstream Country Music circles!

I started on 2NUR-FM in Newcastle in June 1981, assisting and providing material for the Saturday afternoon Country Music program. In June 1982 I started hosting that program (F M Country) before starting Daybreak Country on a Wednesday morning in August 1982. Daybreak Country recessed in October 1986 with me moving to a short lived program on Thursday afternoons between 5 and 6.30 called "Country at Five."

Daybreak Country returned on Sunday mornings from March 1987 and I remained there until July 1987 when I left 2NUR-FM to host Country Sounds on 2HD in Newcastle on Sunday nights. The fickle commercial radio industry even then dictated that I wasn't to remain on 2HD live presenting the Sunday night show. I took leave for a cruise in May 1988 and returned to find that I had been replaced, firstly by Garry Blair and then Carter Edwards, who remains there to this day! However, I still had an association with 2HD, producing Carter's show, a duty that I retained until January 2000.

I returned to 2NUR-FM in September 1988 hosting F M Country once again and remained there until another break from March 1991 until hosting fill in's from March 1992. In December 1993, I returned to Daybreak Country and remained there until April 2002, initially starting at 6am but, as noted below now, extended to start at 5am, still going through to 9am.

Changes at 2HD saw the introduction of a Saturday Night Country Music program, being a more commercial feel of Country. I did not host this one but played a part in the setting up of it. I was, however, called on to fill in from time to time both for this program as well as Carters. By 1995, I was more or less perminate hosting the Saturday Night Country on 2HD as well as producing Carters show for the Sunday night. This was in addition to hosting Daybreak Country on 2NUR-FM on Sunday Mornings.

This situation remained until the end of January 2000 when I was terminated from 2HD due to the fact that the station had been bought by the Broadcasting Operations Group and was going to take an increasing amount of network programs from 2SM Sydney. However 2NUR-FM remained and I extended Daybreak Country by starting at 5.30 am, featuring some of the best songs from the former Saturday Night Country program in this extra segment.

The introduction of half hourly news of a Sunday morning saw me extend Daybreak Country, now to start at 5am

In June 2001, I started another program at CHR-FM from the Cessnock studios of a Monday night, called Travelling Country. This was another 4 hour program, averaging 66 songs.

However - one again the fickle nature of the radio industry struck, when after Sunday 21st April 2002, I ceased to host Daybreak Country on 2NUR-FM and instead moved to the 4pm - 6pm Sunday timeslot. This program is called "Country 4 You"

In addition to this change, I also started another program on CHR-FM. "Saturday Night Country" between 7pm and 12 midnight was based in part on the former Saturday Night Country on 2HD.

This continued until August 2003 when I ceased the Saturday Night Country, in order to lessen the strain on me.

In April 2006 a major change was made to programming on 2NUR-FM that saw my Country 4 You show reduced to a once a month status, where it remains at the moment. However I also host a program, usually on the Saturday night before my monthly program. This Saturday night show is called "Nice and Easy" and is a very popular relaxing easy listening music show.

Travelling Country is still happening on CHR-FM out of Cessnock and is my primary show now.
